ONE of the town’s “hidden gems” is celebrating its first anniversary after launching last year.
The Little George Quarter (LGQ) is a “cosy” café and wine bar situated on George Street, in St Helens.
The intimate venue has a ground floor bar and an upstairs sports bar, which can be hired for functions.
The venture marks a first foray into the hospitality sector for Chris Hobin, who also runs construction firm CJ Hobin Ltd, and owns the LGQ alongside his partner Katie Donohoe.
The venue often hosts live singers and held a special celebration for its first anniversary on Sunday, January 28.
Chris says the first 12 months have been positive, though some residents still don’t know about the bar, with the venue is looking at running various promotions throughout this year.
“I feel that some people don’t know we are here so we are consequently trying to look at different ideas,” said Chris.
“The wet side of it is exceptional, and the food side we are still promoting.”
These will include a ‘Valentine’s Special Offer’ from February 13 to 15, which will offer 15 per cent off on food and a Valentine’s menu available, on pre-bookings only.
“We are going to be offering other promotions for the food side, and a takeaway service and home delivery.”
The LGQ is described as a “cosy” venue, which offers a great welcoming atmosphere.

Chris added: “We want to promote this side of town. People come here and say the bar has a nice, lovely feel to it, it feels cosy.”
Among the Little George Quarter’s plans for 2024 are the opening of its ‘little beer garden’ in the spring in time for Easter, on Good Friday.
“People have called us a little hidden gem, local people get dropped off in a taxi and they tell us I didn’t know it was here.”
Chris added that “slowly but surely” people are hiring the upstairs sports bar room for functions.
In particular the venue’s “bottomless brunches” have received a good reception, and afternoon teas.
The George Street venue employs eight staff, in addition to Chris, and Katie.
Chris added: “All our staff are local people, and when the rugby season starts again that will give us a boost.
Slowly but surely we will be looking at expanding the vessel.”
