A PROPERTY developer has submitted plans to create six properties at the site of disused retail units in St Helens town centre.

Prior approval is being sought for the conversion of vacant units to apartments at the Barrow Arcade site on Claughton Street.

The application has been sent to council planners by Paul Nicholson, of The Nicholson Group, who own several developments in the town centre.

The application site building already hosts Nicholson Place, which plans state consists of 15 properties at the building.

The plans for the Barrow Arcades site state: "Each dwelling house is fronted by a large area of glazing which will provide natural daylight to each space.

"To allow for increased areas of glazing, one-way glass can be used to keep privacy whilst maximising natural daylight. The rear of each dwelling is c7m from glazing."

Plans add the "impact to highways should be negligible" with "access to each dwelling will be done via steps that take up space internally within the dwelling and do not infringe on the highway".

The application adds: "The site is situated away from the main city (sic) centre streets and therefore noise generated by commercial premises should be negligible. 

"The upper floors of this proposal are already dwellinghouses and therefore noise should not be an issue."

The plans are on consultation to the public until Tuesday, January 30, with a decision expected by February 29.
