THE council says it is exploring “a range of long-term actions” to lessen flooding and groundwater issues at St Helens Cemetery.
The Star reported after sections of St Helens Cemetery were submerged under high volumes water following downpours shortly after new year.
This followed issues with flooding in December due to a collapsed drain.
Some Star readers have expressed dismay over persistent issues with flooding in the cemetery and said the issue has caused them difficulties.
This included some saying they have struggled to access graves or the Garden of Remembrance due to flooding, while others stated gravestones of loved ones have needed repair due to being waterlogged.
The council said last week it is taking action to address flooding that occurred, including ongoing repairs to the collapsed drain.
When asked by the Star about the works, a council spokesperson said the local authority “is looking to mitigate by exploring a range of long-term actions”.
The St Helens Borough Council spokesperson said: “Following heavy downpours of rain during the past couple of weeks, flood water levels have now reduced at St Helens Cemetery, with full access of the grounds available - including the garden of remembrance.
“The area has a history of flooding and groundwater issues which the council is looking to mitigate by exploring a range of long-term actions.”

They added: “St Helens Cemetery is a vital council asset that we have invested in significantly during the past couple of years through a full refurbishment of the crematorium building, and staff work exceptionally hard day in day out to uphold such high standards.
“Maintenance of the cemetery as a peaceful and accessible space where people can come to remember loved ones is incredibly important to us and we apologise for any inconvenience the recent flooding has caused.”
