A DAD-OF-TWO who built a glamping pod in his garden at the start of the pandemic is set to appear on Dragons' Den on Thursday after his “accidental business” grew in popularity.
The Instagram-able pods are set in the Secret Garden Glamping Site in nearby Skelmersdale but bordering Rainford and have been described as looking like something straight from the reality TV show Love Island.
The idea behind the five-star woodland site is from dad of two, Derry Green who originally began building the pods out of lockdown boredom for him and his children to enjoy.
He now has 12 pods – and is working on the 13th, with his ventures followed by his more than 750,000 viewers across his social media channels.
Due to his popularity, he was approached by one of the producers of Dragons' Den and agreed to pitch to the investors.
Talking to the Star, Derry, 41, said: “I had a European transport business and when lockdown hit it meant I was stuck at home.
“I get bored really easily, so I decided to start a project with my kids on the bit of land we had next to our house.”
What started as a home project, turned into a social media frenzy once Derry began sharing his progress pictures on Facebook.
He said: “It honestly is an amazing thing to create an accidental business but to have it be popular and people to enjoy it is amazing.
“The producers got in touch and I was so nervous getting to pitch to the Dragons but all was OK on the day and I can’t for people to tune in to watch it and see how it went.
“What I will say is everyone was really positive and I felt really reassured by them, I’m not a great public speaker but I practised and practised.
“Can’t believe this all happened because I got bored in lockdown.”
Dragon’s Den will air on Channel 4 on Thursday, January 11 at 8pm.
Priced from £195 a night, the pods are available to book via thesecretgardenglamping.uk
