A SCOOTER rider has been taken to hospital after a serious crash this afternoon.

Police have confirmed they received a report of a collision involving a red Fiat car and scooter, at the junction of Market Street and Heather Brae in Earlestown, shortly after 3pm.

The man on the scooter has been taken to hospital with a serious head injury and is receiving treatment, a police spokesperson said.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries.

Road closures are in place on Market Street, Alpine Street, Sankey Street and Crown Street while police deal with this incident.

A police statement added: "We ask motorists to please find an alternative route and thank you for your patience.

"We are in the early stages of investigating this collision and are appealing for any witnesses, CCTV and dashcam footage which may assist our ongoing enquiries.
