THE crew who attended a fatal crash involving their fellow colleague Ben Lightburn have won a Compassionate Care Award.

Devoted father and North West Ambulance Service Ben Lightburn died in the two-car collision on Mossborough Road in Rainford on January 1, 2023.

The 31-year-old, who lived in Rainford, was on his way to work.

On September 7, 2023, North West Ambulance Service celebrated and rewarded some of the fantastic work at their annual Star Awards and two of those awarded were crewmates who attended Ben’s fatal crash that day.

These were Paramedic Anthony McCabe and Rotational Specialist Paramedic Connor Wardil who were awarded the Compassionate Care Award for the actions they took when attending a fatal crash on New Year’s Day that involved their fellow colleague.

On January 1 of this year, Paramedic Ben Lightburn was involved in a car crash in which he lost his life.

Anthony and Connor attended the incident, not knowing at the time that the patient was their friend and colleague.

Anthony and Connor were nominated by paramedics Gabrielle Leonard and Janine Fraser.

They said: "They not only put aside their own feelings to try and save Ben, but they showed amazing care, compassion and professionalism by transporting the other injured people to hospital.

“Their actions meant the others received the care they deserved while they were under extreme distress themselves. We are very proud of Anthony and Connor and everyone else who attended to Ben that day.”
