POLICE have urged people to come forward if they witnessed a crash which led to the death of a 74-year-old woman.

As reported yesterday, a Land Rover Freelander was involved in a collision with a Ford Transit van at the junction of Church Street and Park Road North, Newton-le-Willows at about 11.30am on Wednesday,  September 20.

The 74-year-old woman, who was driving the Land Rover Freelander, was taken to hospital in a serious condition but died a short time later.

There were no other reported injuries.

The tragedy in the centre of Newton has left the tight-knit community shocked.

Appeal for witnesses

Star readers posted messages on social media expressing sympathy to the victim's family.

In a statement, police said: "Her family have been made aware and are being supported by police officers and we would ask for their privacy to be respected at this time."

In a direct appeal for witnesses, Sergeant Simon Duffy, from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Merseyside Police, said: "We are investigating the circumstances of this incident and HM Coroner will be made aware.

“If anyone saw the incident, I would be grateful if they could give my team a call.

“Similarly, I would urge any residents who have any CCTV or doorbell footage at their properties on the junction to check and see if it has captured the build up to this incident.

"Any piece of information, no matter how small or insignificant it may appear, could assist us in our investigation.”
