A PUB which has closed will be turned into a convenience store.
At the planning committee meeting on Tuesday, councillors approved an application proposing the change of use of the Stag Hotel pub in Garswood, on Station Road, to a convenience store with a wraparound extension and associated works.
The application had been recommended for approval, subject to conditions.
The application site is located on a prominent corner of Station Road and Garswood Road. It is a two-storey detached building.
Vacant site
According to a report to the committee, the public house ceased operations in November 2022 and has been vacant ever since.
It added: “There have been later additions to the building consisting of two single storey brick-built flat roof extensions to the eastern and southern elevations of the building.
“The surrounding area is largely residential in nature comprising dwellings of varying styles and ages including bungalows, houses, and terraced properties dating from the early 20th century.
“The site measures approximately 0.18 hectares including the public house building, with associated surface level car parking and beer garden. The existing access points to the site are currently from Station Road and Garswood Road.”
There would be a new access point from Station Road that would be used in connection with delivery vehicles only, according to the report.
Meanwhile, in terms of alterations to the former public house, the size and shape of the window openings on the building to the northern and western elevations are to be "largely retained as existing".
An external ATM would be positioned next to the store entrance on the proposed wraparound extension.
A plant equipment enclosure and bin storage areas would be located near to the building and enclosed with brick walls.
The convenience store would have a gross internal floor area of 360 square metres and would operate between the hours of 7am to 11pm every day.
