THE Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating after a man in his 30s died after being arrested by police in St Helens.

The man was arrested on Gartons Lane by Merseyside Police officers on Sunday, August 20 after they received a concern for welfare call.

The IOPC have stated that they established that on arrival the officers spoke to the man who was agitated.

They then restrained him with handcuffs and leg restraints and was transported to Whiston Hospital by paramedics.

He remained in hospital receiving treatment until he died on Tuesday, August 22.

The IOPC confirmed that they received a mandatory referral from the force due to the fact the man had been detained by officers prior to becoming unwell.

IOPC Regional Director Emily Barry said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends all those affected by his death.

“Given the man fell unwell shortly after being detained and died, it is important that an independent investigation is carried out to establish all of the circumstances surrounding this incident, including the actions and decision-making of officers.”
