FIREFIGHTERS were called after a vehicle was in flames off the M6 near Haydock Island this morning (Friday).

Crews arrived at around 8am to find a vehicle on fire on the north slip road by junction 23.

Firefighters spent around half an hour tackling the flames.

A spokeswoman said: "Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were called to an incident this morning at the north slip road by junction 23 of the M6, Haydock, on 11 August.

"Crews were alerted at 7.55am and on scene at 8.04am. Two fire engines attended.

"Crews arrived to find one vehicle involved in fire. One firefighter wearing breathing apparatus began fighting the fire under general observation using a hose reel jet.

"The fire was soon extinguished and crews remained on scene to make the vehicle safe.

"Crews left the scene at 8.28am."

Meanwhile, another vehicle fire has caused delays on the M62 at Rainhill Stopps later this morning.
