POLICE were called after reports of three men in possession of weapons causing a disturbance in the street.

Officers arrested a man after they were called on Monday evening to Crossley Road, in Thatto Heath, at around 7.45pm.

Residents reported seeing a police presence in the area and a helicopter overhead.

Police confirmed they have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of affray.

There was speculation in the community that the suspects had been armed with machetes.

When asked by the Star if the weapons were machetes, a Merseyside Police spokeswoman said they were bladed weapons and enquiries are ongoing

A police investigation is in its early stages and remains ongoing, the force said.

The Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "A man has been arrested following a report of affray in St Helens last night, Monday, July 17.

"At around 7.45pm officers were called to Crossley Road where it was reported that three men were causing a disturbance in the street and in possession of weapons.

"No injuries were reported.

"A 24-year-old man from St Helens has been arrested on suspicion of affray. He is in police custody to be questioned."

She added: "We are in the early stages of investigating the incident and our inquiries are ongoing. 

"CCTV and witness inquiries are being carried out, and we are appealing for anyone with information or witnessed the incident to come forward.

"In addition, we also ask for those in the area at that time to please check your CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage to see if it has captured any footage which may help with the investigation.
