WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our St Helens Star Camera Club group.
This week, Chris Shaw shares some of his favourite photographs.
Chris, who lived in Whiston before moving to Sutton Leach, developed an interest in photography during the Covid-19 lockdowns when he and his wife would take their dogs for walks.

When and why did you take up photography?
I used to take photos on holiday but when Covid-19 hit I needed something to keep me sane. I have been on medication for stress and depression for several years and, like many others, I struggled during the pandemic. My wife and I have two dogs and I decided to take my camera with me when we went for a walk.
What do you love about taking pictures?
During the Covid-19 lockdowns there were no planes in the sky which made me realise the colours, sounds and beauty of nature – things that I’d taken for granted. I love wildlife and being outside. It’s great to hear what people think of my photos particularly if they make them smile – it makes my day. It gives me a sense of calm and is a great way to relax.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?
I mainly go to Carr Mill Dam and local parks – Sherdley and Taylor - and of course the Dream. Anywhere I may catch a few wildlife shots is great. I nearly always have a camera with me as you never know what you may see!
What is your favourite subject matter and why?
I love wildlife and there are so many different birds and animals out there - I never get bored. I like scenery and when you get the right conditions like autumn sun or hot summer weather, the colours are amazing.

What do you enjoy about being part of our Camera Club on Facebook?
I’m very much an amateur photographer and it’s nice to be part of a community that complement each other on their photos. There’s always someone who can give you tips. I enjoy seeing other people’s work – it is inspiring.
If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?
I work shifts so I am limited to the amount of time I can spend taking photos. I’d like to go to Martin Mere, Chester Zoo and wildlife parks in general. On my bucket list would be a safari. It’s never too late to start taking photos - I just wish I had done it sooner.
