EMERGENCY services rushed to the scene of a dangerous "wind driven" grass fire this afternoon.

Four fire engines are reported to have attended the scene of a grass fire, on the fields next to the junction of the East Lancs Road and Houghtons Lane in Eccleston.

With the blaze building from around 3pm on Tuesday, July 4, fire crews reported that the grass fire grew to around 200x500 metres in size.

Highlighting the seriousness of the incident, tractors were reported to be digging ditches to create a "fire break" and prevent the blaze from spreading any further.

The main blaze has since been reduced due to the prompt work of the fire service, with no reports of the fire spreading or causing damage.

One fire engine is said to have remained at the scene to continue putting out the last of the flames, with fire hotspots and the wider scene checked over.

The scene around Houghtons Lane is reported to have been closed while fire crews dealt with the incident, and is hoped to be reopened this afternoon.
