A LARGE police presence swooped on a housing estate this afternoon after two men were stabbed.

The incident unfolded at an address on Chapel Street, at the junction with Cooper Street.

One of the injured men suffered a stab wound to the neck and is in a stable condition.

In a statement, police said a 20-year-old woman and two men aged 66 and 40 from St Helens, who were the victims of the attack, have all been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

They will each be questioned by detectives and an investigation is continuing in the community.

Chief Inspector Nathan Stockley said: “Although our officers have made swift arrests shortly after the incident which has left two men injured our investigation is still in its very early stages.

“If you saw what happened or have any information which could help us, please get in touch so we can continue our investigations.


“I would like to reassure residents that we believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no wider threat to the community.

“We rely on members of the public coming forward with information so please tell us what you know so we can continue to take action.”

Several police vehicles and a group of officers are stationed at the scene.

Attention appeared to be focused on a block of flats, with officers in place at the front and rear of the property.

Star readers reported a high volume of police activity in the Cowley Hill and St Helens areas.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed there is an “ongoing incident” and as statement is expected to be issued shortly.
