POLICE are at an address in Sutton as part of an investigation after two men were arrested on suspicion of firearms and drugs offences.

Officers made the arrests after they stopped a car on Dunnings Bridge Road, in Netherton, on Wednesday afternoon, June 21.

A 43-year-old man from Litherland has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.

A 36-year-old man from St Helens has been arrested on suspicion of possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate, possession with intent to supply a Class A controlled drug (cocaine); acquiring/using/possessing criminal property and handling stolen goods.

Following further inquiries, police carried out a search of a property in St Helens.

Residents reported seeing police and forensics officers in the area of Kent Road, in Sutton, on Wednesday evening.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that officers remain at an address as part of the investigation. 

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm officers are at currently at an address in St Helens as part of an ongoing investigation.

"Op Pelican officers stopped a car being driven along Dunnings Bridge Road on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 21, and arrested the driver.

"Following further inquiries a search was carried out a property in St Helens."

She added: "A 43-year-old man from the Litherland area has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.

"A 36-year-old man from the St Helens area has been arrested on suspicion of possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate, possession with intent to supply a Class A controlled drug (cocaine); acquiring/using/possessing criminal property and handling stolen goods.

"Both men are currently in custody as inquiries continue."
