A ST Helens midwife is taking on a gruelling 100km trek around Hadrian’s Wall with celebrities like Giovanna Fletcher and Emma and Matt Willis to raise funds for a breast cancer charity.
Mum-of-four Sarah Hill, a midwife in the community of St Helens for five years, will be donning her walking boots and heading to Northumberland later this month to take part in Coppafeel’s week-long trek.
The 40-year-old from Sutton decided to sign up inspired with her mum’s battle with breast cancer.
Sarah, who is in Emma and Matt Willis’ camp during the trek, said: “I follow Giovanna Fletcher on Instagram and she is a patron for Coppafeel and I love walking, which I use for my own mental health really, so when that people could apply to get involved I knew I wanted to do it for mum.
“My mum had breast cancer and thankfully after a mastectomy she is now in remission but it was horrendous and anything we can do to highlight the need for more research is something I’m passionate about.
“I’ve had a tough few years, I lost my dad to Covid very suddenly in 2020 and then mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and with the covid delays she had to wait over 12 months for her surgery, but luckily her cancer was contained and after the mastectomy she is doing well.
“Saying that though it was tough for everyone and getting out into nature really helped me, I’ve gone on walks in the Lake District and places like that as it’s really helped with my mental health”
“Though mum is ok now, I am aware that others aren't as lucky, having witnessed friends and colleagues endure much more grueling treatment.
“This trek will be a challenge to me but nothing in comparison to the challenge that brave women and men affected by breast cancer face every single day.
“Until a cure is found it is vital that awareness is raised around the early signs and symptoms of breast cancer so that precious lives can be saved.”
The 100km trek works out at around 23km a day and each person taking part has to raise £2,250 towards research.
