WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our St Helens Star Camera Club group.

This week, Suzie Remadems shares some of her favourite photographs.

Suzie, who is originally from Australia and now lives in St Helens, loves taking photos at St Helens Cemetery using the dark shadows to create some moody shots.

Her ultimate ambition is to travel to New York and photograph some of the city’s skyline.

When and why did you take up photography?

I’ve always loved taking photographs since I was very young. My grandmother used to have her little pocket camera and take it with her everywhere she went. It was her way of making lasting memories for us when we were little. She’d always let us help and take a few snaps. Of course, film and developing was rather expensive back in the day and unfortunately, we’d often end up with lots of blurry images! If she were still alive, I’m sure she’d marvel at digital camera technology. This started my love of photography. I studied it in high school and wanted to be a press photographer when I was older.

What do you love about taking pictures?

Taking pictures means many things to me. I love being able to tell a story and use my mind creatively. It even works positively with my anxiety - getting out in the fresh air is a wonderful distraction. I have recently been given my first digital camera, so I’ve been learning as I go.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

My favourite place to take photos has been in St Helens Cemetery. I love the moody, dark shots. The cemetery is beautiful, especially in winter but I’ve taken some wonderful sunrise images from there as well.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

My favourite subject matter is trees, especially ones during winter. The stark look when they have no leaves always creates such a beautiful back drop. I’ve also enjoyed visiting a few castles and ruins that have then sparked off an interest in their history.

What do you enjoy about being part of our Camera Club on Facebook?

The Facebook Camera Club is a wonderfully supportive group of people. I’ve enjoyed posting my photos and receiving positive feedback - it has given me a huge boost in confidence. It’s lovely to see other people’s images as well and know that you’re in good company with some very talented individuals.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?

New York has always been a place I’d love to visit. The photo opportunities and sights would be endless.
