WHEN it comes to breakfast, you can’t go wrong with a full English – fried eggs, sausages and bacon with hash browns, beans and toast.
But could you manage three of everything? Could you stomach Shakey J’s award-winning mega breakfast?
Each week, we will be searching for the best St Helens has to offer in different categories.
Hair by Alice Michelle took the first Best of 2023 title – Best for Hair in St Helens – and Blackburn’s is officially Best for Pies with Kreative Kirsty being crowned Best for Nails, The Brown Edge Pub is Best for Roast Dinner and The Townhouse was announced as Best for Cocktails.
Voting for St Helens’ Best for Fitness is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Fish and Chips.
Next up was breakfast and Shakey J’s beat off some tough competition and came out on top.
Shakey J’s opened its doors in 2016 selling milkshakes and desserts to take away but after several years of deliveries and late nights, owner Christopher Jackson and his partner Claire decided to relocate to bigger premises.
Chris said: “We wanted to relocate to bigger premises while maintaining our high street location and the opportunity was too good to miss.
“We purchased an existing coffee shop on High Street in Newton-le-Willows and renovated it to create Shakey J’s family dining.
“We serve breakfast, burgers and desserts.
“As parents of young children, we wanted it to feel inclusive for everyone and people of all ages.
“We added booths and a free retro arcade gaming and toy cupboard.
“We hope customers like the warm and welcoming environment here at Shakey J’s.”
So, what do the customers think of Shakey J’s? Why did they think their breakfasts should take the latest crown?
There’s something for everyone at Shakey J’s where the “staff are friendly and it’s always a warm and fun environment”.
One nomination said: “It’s absolutely the best breakfast in the north west.
“All made fresh to order and served in an army style tin.
“Second to none!”
There’s a wide selection of breakfast items on the menu at Shakey J’s including regular breakfasts, large breakfasts and mega breakfasts – three sausages, three slices of bacon, three fried or scrambled eggs, three has browns, three black pudding together with tomatoes, mushrooms, beans and toast all served with a choice of tea of coffee.
Chris said: “We were conscious of keeping our ingredients fresh and local and we get daily deliveries from Colin, our local butcher and our eggs are from a nearby farm.
“We know the quality of the produce is good and it’s prepared to a high standard for our customers.
“Everyone works so hard and Claire and I greatly appreciate all their efforts.”
He added: “To hear that we were nominated and made the shortlist for this award was a massive achievement and we are so proud of what we have built here.
“It’s been great to see so many of our neighbouring businesses dine with us and offer their support.
“The support from all our customers, old and new, has been incredible and we’d like to thank everyone for following us on our journey to serving the breakfast in the borough – wow!”
