Mouth-wateringly delicious pies were first served at Blackburns in 1942 and they’re officially the best in St Helens.

Last week, Hair by Alice Michelle took the first Best of 2023 title – Best for Hair in St Helens.
We started with Best for Hair and then moved onto Best for Pies and Best for Nails.
Voting for St Helens’ Best for Nails is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Roast Dinner.
Six tasty pies in St Helens made the shortlist for Best for Pies with Blackburns beating off some tough competition and taking the coveted title.
A normal day starts around 5am for the early team and finishes at around 5.30pm at the bakery, which is perfectly placed in a bustling back street shopping area.
Whatever time you choose to visit Blackburns on Cambridge Road, there’s always a queue of customers out the door, waiting to pick up a pie or a freshly baked loaf of bread.
Owner Mike Blackburn runs the family-run business which has been passed down from his grandmother to his father and to him.
The 78-year-old sells pies – pork, beef, steak and meat and potato – as well as pasties, sausage rolls and hot pots Monday to Saturday, with the bakery closed on Sundays.
He said: “The recipes date back to 1942 – we’ve not changed them.
“They’re tried and tested and we continue to give the customers what they want.
“We have some cracking customers, who appreciate our lovely staff working in the bakery, and there’s always a big queue.
“We’re a local business and we appreciate the local support.
“It’s so kind of our customers to nominate us for this award and we’re so pleased to have won.
“We had no idea so it’s a wonderful surprise.”
