A PROJECT to improve the high street in Newton-le-Willows has begun.
The initiative, formed by volunteers from the community, is aimed at improving the appearance of Newton High Street to attract visitors, support local businesses, and bring a sense of pride to residents.
The project, named Newton in Bloom, has officially piloted on the high street, and if successful, there is potential for the initiative to be introduced into other areas of Newton-le-Willows.
Businesses and organisations have been discussing funding for the initiative, with several already contributing to the project.
The first phase of the project has seen volunteers planting along the high street.
Catherine Donnellan, member of the Friends of Newton High Street group volunteering in the Newton in Bloom project, said: "The idea of the project is to improve our environment; we want to make it user-friendly and to make the high street look lovely.
"We put pamphlets in businesses and residents’ doors, and it’s been absolutely remarkable.
"It’s been quite touching really to see the support and enthusiasm that people have had for it; they’ve been amazing.
"We would love other areas to get involved."
The group would like to thank residents, businesses, and volunteers who have been involved with the initiative and are calling on more sponsors for the project.
