PLANS have been drawn up seeking permission to install a 5G mast on a street pavement.

What are the plans?

Proposals sent to St Helens Council by CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd for the installation of a 17m high monopole on Gartons Lane, Clock Face.

This would include six antennas, three equipment cabinets and ancillary development including a GPS module.

The Star has reported in recent months after bids to install 5G masts near Sutton Park, and in Dentons Green were refused by St Helens Council, as well as a 2021 application in relation to Rainford.

Each application attracted numerous objections from residents nearby to the proposed sites.

What the application says

In the application for Gartons Lane, a 5G ‘guide’ document states: “There is nothing fundamentally different about the physical characteristics of the radio signals that will be produced by 5G compared to previous technologies like 3G and 4G.

“Compared to previous generations of mobile services, 5G offers faster internet speeds and the ability to connect thousands of different devices in a small area.

“This means it could help create new ‘smart’ services for people in public spaces – providing real-time information to them about the local area and availability of services.”

Public consultation

The application is on standard consultation to the public until Thursday, March 30.

A determination deadline has been set for May 1.
