EMERGENCY services were called after the partial collapse of a former Conservative club building on Saturday afternoon.

The rear of the ex-Conservative club on Earle Street, Newton-le-Willows, fell down.

Concerns over the state of the building have been raised repeatedly over recent weeks.

Firefighters were alerted at 3.15pm and on the scene shortly afterwards. Police sealed off the area.

Two fire engines were in attendance, as well as the search and rescue appliance and a fire service drone.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service say that "on arrival crews found a three-storey building, approximately 30m x 40m" with the "rear of the building collapsed".

A cordon was put in place and Earle Street has been closed by police before the building was scaled down and handed over to police this evening.

Updating residents about the incident, Councillor Terry McGuire, who represents the Newton-le-Willows West ward, said a drone and robot were used to check inside the building.

Cllr McGuire also shared a picture of the collapse on social media.
