CONOR McGinn MP and councillors came together to chat with residents about the accessibility at Garswood Station.

Garswood is one of twenty stations across Merseyside not to have full disabled access and there are concerns about the state of the existing bridge between the Wigan and Liverpool platforms.

Cllr Sue Murphy alongside local resident Jim Stevenson and Seneley Green Parish Council has long campaigned for the funding required and working with Conor has regularly ensured the matter is raised with Ministers in Parliament and MerseyTravel.

They have also lobbied Northern Rail to ensure that under threat services at the station have not been axed and continue to press for improvements to the timetable and facilities.

Councillor Sue Murphy said: “The station is invaluable for our community and proper access is of paramount importance to our residents, especially disabled people.

“We are grateful for Conor’s on-going support in trying to secure access for all at Garswood station.”

St Helens representatives on MerseyTravel, Cllrs Keith Laird and Anne McCormack, pledged to continue raising the issues and campaigning for public transport in the borough.

Mr McGinn said: “I have regularly raised the need for Garswood station to become step free, to ensure that all who want to use the station can do so.

“It’s important that we also keep fighting to ensure services remain here, and that the station itself receives the investment it needs. I have spoken about this in debates in parliament, and made my position clear to those responsible for funding the network locally.

“Working together, we have secured investment at other stations locally in St Helens, and I want to see that same investment here at Garswood.”
