A MAN in his 60s is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car near the YMCA buildings in St Helens town centre on Sunday night.
Police confirmed that at about 9.10pm officers received a report of a collision involving a black Volvo and a pedestrian on North Road, near the YMCA building.
The man, aged in his 60s, was taken to hospital with "a serious head injury" and is receiving treatment, said police.
Officers confirmed on Monday his condition is "critical".
The man's son took to social media to praise passer-by who had given first aid at the scene prior to an ambulance arriving.
Last night an extensive police presence was at the scene as officers carried out an investigation.
The roundabout was partially closed - with entrances via College Street and North Road closed.
