A CHINESE restaurant and two takeaways have been handed a zero and a one star food hygiene ratings following recent inspections in St Helens.

Dragon and Phoenix, a Chinese restaurant on High Street, Newton-le-Willows, was given a zero out of five score after an assessment in November 2022, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

From a score of zero to five, food hygiene ratings are given to food handling businesses after an inspection has assessed how well they comply with food safety laws.

The rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection by the local authority.

The assessment at Dragon and Phoenix found that improvement is necessary for its hygienic food handling.

Major improvements were reported as necessary for the cleanliness and condition of the building, as well as its management of food safety.

A zero food hygiene rating also suggests that the business could be putting people's health at immediate risk.

In December, the Fortune House takeaway was handed a one-star-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

The Higher Parr Street Chinese takeaway was found to need improvements in its hygienic food handling as well as the cleanliness and condition of the building.

Major improvements were also noted as being necessary for the management of food safety.

Food Standards inspectors also visited Gelato Royale Express in December, which also received a low score of one star from its Food Hygiene inspection.

Inspectors found that the McCormack Avenue American Diner needed improvements in its hygienic food handling as well as the cleanliness and condition of the building.

Major improvements were noted as being necessary for the management of food safety.

For food-handling businesses such as restaurants, cafes, and takeaways, Dragon and Phoenix is the only business in St Helens with a zero food hygiene rating.

There are currently seven restaurants, cafes, or takeaways operating with a one-star food hygiene rating.
