LEN Rainford specialises in franchises – helping people expand their business and assisting others who want to branch out in an already successful market.
As Len says, the name of his business – The Franchise Specialist – explains exactly what he does and he implements a tried and tested ‘Seven Step Strategy’ to achieve the best for all parties involved.
Here in our latest business feature, Len shares his business knowledge and how he hopes to help new entrepreneurs take their first step in 2023.
What’s the name of the business?
The Franchise Specialist
What’s the address?
8 Cheltenham Drive, Newton-le-Willows, WA12 0BB
When did you open the business?
The business started in October 2013.
Are you local to the area? Did you grow up here?
I am now. I have lived here for the past 25 years but I’m from Standish originally.
Tell me a bit about your business.
As the name implies, I specialise in franchising, working with both franchisors aiming to expand their business, without taking on extra people, locations and extra costs themselves, and franchisees looking to grow by implementing a proven model.
What do you do? What services do you provide?
Based on years of experience, I have developed a ‘Seven Step Strategy’ that covers everything a business needs to implement when franchising their business.

Why did you decide to open your own business?
I have always been entrepreneurial and I've had five businesses in different sectors since my mid-twenties.
What’s your business background?
My business experience is across a wide range of enterprises including wholesale warehouse (Fancy Goods), hairdressers and beauty salons, health clubs, same day delivery company (Sameday UK).
Why this type of business?
In terms of franchising, most people immediately think of McDonalds or Subway but there are franchising opportunities in all kinds of areas. For example, a huge range of services have been franchised from business services to martial arts, targeted at both individual and commercial markets. I have been involved in franchising for more than 30 years and whilst franchising is quite a niche market, it continues to be a real growth area, so it just made sense.
How did the Covid-19 pandemic affect your business?
I was open long before Covid hit and it did have some effect on my business, as companies were reluctant to develop franchise propositions during that period. Of course, with the uncertainty, people were hesitant to invest in a new venture. Hopefully that is all well behind us now.

What makes your business different to others in the same area/field? What sets your business apart from your competitors?
My ‘Seven Step Strategy’ makes my business unique and the fact that I am always prepared to meet people face to face before signing up, which some of my competitors won’t do.
Why do loyal customers return to your business?
That is simple to answer – the good service and valuable advice provided!
What’s next? What do the next few months hold for you and your business?
I have already got several companies in the pipeline. I’m always looking for new opportunities to help franchise a successful business model or help new entrepreneurs take their first steps into business ownership. I certainly expect the business to continue growing.
