ST HELENS Council has released the dates over the Christmas and New Year period that bin collections will take place.
Where to recycle
The local authority has also issued a reminder that popular things that get recycled over the Christmas week such as wrapping paper, cards, cardboard and Christmas trees, will need to be taken to a local recycling centre.
For more information on where you can recycle over the Christmas period visit recyclenow.com.
Residents can clear out and recycle unwanted clothing, and can check their nearest textile bank by putting their postcode and what they would like to donate into the Recycle now website, and this will give your local drop-off point.
Real Christmas tree drop-off points
Meanwhile, real Christmas trees can be recycled and turned into chippings for parks. Drop-off points are:
- Sutton Park on Marina Avenue,
- Victoria Park on Bishop Road,
- Sankey Valley Visitor Centre Blackbrook Road car park,
- Mesnes Park on Park Road North car park,
- Taylor Park, Grosvenor Road car park,
- Moss Bank Road open space.
The last drop off date is January 6, 2023. People can also take them to a local Household Recycling Centre.
The council has reminded residents that unwanted artificial trees, or spare decorations can be donated to a charity shop for re-use.
Leftover food
Meanwhile, ideas for leftover food are available from the Love Food Hate Waste website, which has got loads of recipes to try out. Alternatively, people can freeze leftovers for another day, to save throwing it away.

Potatoes are the most wasted food in the UK particularly over Christmas, they need to be stored in a cool, dark dry place to keep them fresher for longer.
Leftover turkey can be stored in the fridge for up to two days, sometimes there is more than a couple of days worth leftover, so why not freeze it for another day. Once defrosted the golden rule is only reheat it once!
Residents with additional recycling should separate the items by type and place glass in a separate box, bundle cardboard and use clear sacks for extra paper, cans and plastic. Alternatively, you can take it to your local Household Waste & Recycling Centre.
The council is urging people to remember their weekly food waste collection will continue throughout the Christmas period. For more information visit the council's food caddy page.
Recycling and waste
Recycling and waste crews will be at work over the festive period, but public holidays mean there will be some changes to the normal collection calendar.
Residents are asked to have waste and recycling ready for collection as normal by 6.30am.
