Scottish Power said the following postcodes were affected:
L354PA, L354PB, L354PF, L354PH, L354PJ, L354PR, L354PS, L354PT, L354PU, L354PX, L354PY, L354PZ, L354QA, L354QD, L354QZ, L354RA, L358NT, L358NZ, L358PF, L358PG, L358PL, L358PQ
It is understood restoration took longer than expected, with some homes cut off from power until the early hours, because of difficulties encountered repairing an underground cable fault.
England beat Wales 3-0 to cement their place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
Some residents took to social media to voice their frustration at the timing of the power cut.
"Couldn't have timed it worse", one remarked.
