THEY say you see things differently when you have children. I’ve only been a mum for almost 17 months, but I have to tell you that’s 100 per cent been true for me.

Christmas has always been lovely. The festive spirit, the lights, the food...the mulled wine...but seeing everything again through the eyes of your child makes it even more special.

St Helens Star:

My son was so young last Christmas, so for all intents and purposes this Christmas is his first proper one.

So, when I got an invite to attend Knowsley Safari Park’s Enchanted Lights I knew I had to make it happen.

On Saturday, wrapped up in many layers on his little push along trike, we went along and he absolutely loved it.

It’s more than just the light up animals, it’s the atmosphere.

St Helens Star:

On arrival we got our tickets, headed to the trail (what in the day is the foot safari) and saw hanging lights and lit up animals such as penguins, giraffes and flamingos – which for my animal mad son made his day and he pointed at all of them.

But what made it extra special was the letters to Father Christmas huts, where children can write their letters and post it in a talking post box – which admittedly caused a few tears because he did not want to leave it after he discovered it made a noise when you posted the letter.

St Helens Star:

There were toasted marshmallows, and food vendors serving up festive hot chocolates and drinks as well as delicious food and treats for all which just added to the atmosphere.

Highlights also included going through the two technicolour light tunnels and watching him watch as Santa's elves prepare for the big day at his workshop.

After that there was then the opportunity to go on some rides – many of which admittedly he was too little and by that time too tired for – but I’m sure next year I will be dragged on to the pirate ride more than once.

St Helens Star:

For the cost and what you get it’s a fantastic little evening out. He was asleep before we even got home and he even stayed asleep as I carried him in.

A sign of a good evening out – whatever the age. And making us all feel very Christmassy for the first time this year.

Enchanted is at Knowsley Safari Park until December 30 with tickets costing £11 for children and adults, but under 3s go free.
