WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our St Helens Star Camera Club group.

Paula Terry, who lives in Parr, started taking pictures three years ago when she would go for walks with her mum, who had been diagnosed with cancer.

She likes getting close to nature and watching birds hatch on the waterways and build up their strength to fly away.

When and why did you take up photography?

I took up photography when I started to take my mum out on walks in 2019. We found out she had terminal cancer and photography was a way of us getting some exercise and I could take some photos. She has sadly passed away now but I still manage to get out taking pictures.

What do you love about taking pictures?

I love being outdoors and visiting different places. I usually have my camera with me but it’s about being in the right spot at the right time. There’s nothing more relaxing than going for a walk and seeing all the different wildlife around us.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

My favourite place to take photos is Spike Island in Widnes. You get a variety of wildlife and birds. There are swans, coots and moorhens as well as Canadian Geese. On the River Mersey you can see shelducks, little egrets and herons as well as various sea birds.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

My favourite subject matter is most definitely birds. I like to walk along the Sankey Canal and feed the swans while taking plenty of photos. I have watched this year’s cygnets hatch and grow and it’s been so lovely to see.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?

I would love to go to Norway to take photographs. I’d like to capture the Northern Lights as well as the mountains and lakes. There are so many things I could photograph in Norway.
