TWO care homes in the borough held a graduation ceremony for their residents to celebrate their achievements later in life.

Alexandra in Newton-le-Willows and Victoria in Rainford both recognised their residents’ achievements and decided to hold a ceremony to congratulate them.

The ceremony emphasised that it is never too late to learn something new, with both care homes’ residents a testament of this.

Elderly residents put their skills to the test as they studied subjects including languages, singing and dancing, and graffiti art.

The later-in-life education is part of the Love Learning event led by both care homes’ company Four Seasons.

Loved ones of residents were able to attend the ceremony where they showcased accomplishments and award certificates.

Wendy Martindale, Alexandra Care Home manager, said: "Continuing to learn in older age has many benefits.

"As well as keeping our brains healthy, acquiring new knowledge gives a real sense of purpose and achievement.

"Our Magic Moments activities programme includes lots of opportunities to get involved, learn new things and above all have great fun together."

Residents of the Newton care home also shared their gratitude towards the accomplishment, including 74-year-old Margaret Gimson.

Margaret said: "I can’t say I was that keen on school when I was younger but I’ve loved learning lots of new things and feel really proud of myself.

"My favourite activity has been the dancing sessions; I reckon I’d give those professionals on Strictly a run for their money."

Another resident Joseph Russell, 86, added: "They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but I’ve learnt so many new things this year.

"I can now speak a bit of Spanish and French, know how to keep fit by exercising in my chair and I even learnt how to make the best pizza in the world from a chef in Rome."
