THE CITADEL theatre has reopened for bookings after the venue cancelled its schedule of performances last month.
After signing a five-year lease with the Citadel in December 2020, MD Creatives ended their contract with the venue last month.
The creative arts academy cited lingering financial problems from the pandemic and cost of living crisis as the reason for leaving the premises, and cancelled all of their upcoming shows and performances for the rest of the year.
However, in order to keep the venue alive and ensure the success of the town centre's nightlife, the Citadel has been kept open by landlord Ian Pitts and his associate Jamie Etchells.
The pair have reopened the bookings for the Citadel, with Starsailor lead singer James Walsh booked in for December.
Jamie, who has worked in the entertainment industry for the past 20 years, said: "When the previous tenant left the Citadel, we couldn't bear the thought of it just lying empty when it's such an important and loved building in St Helens.
"Having the Citadel open is absolutely crucial to the success of the town centre and the night time economy.
"So instead of just lying empty waiting for a new tenant, we decided to keep it open and the diary is very much open for bookings."
A brand new theatre production, 'Ten Commandments' will be the first show back at the Citadel, with further tribute acts and performances planned.
