A CHILDREN'S play area was set alight and burned in Queens Park over the weekend.

Fire crews were called to a small fire in Queens Park Recreation Ground, on Boundary Road at around 2.10pm on Sunday, September 4.

Firefighters found an open fire next to children's play equipment in the park and extinguished it with buckets of water.

A resident reported the fire was set alight by a "mindless" group who fled before the fire crews arrived.

It is the second time in less than a week that the park has been vandalised, with the play area and rubber matting also set alight on Wednesday, August 31.

There has also been reports of litter left around the park, as well as similar incidents of fire damage in Victoria Park.

The resident said: "I don't know who has done this but there a gang of youths who hang around the area.

"It doesn't seem like a one-off and the individuals involved seem to want to cause damage."

The fire crews made the scene safe at the park and left shortly after arriving.
