POLICE were called to Ruskin sportsground after allegations an adult was assaulted as a row broke out during a junior football match.

Officers attended the site in Dentons Green after an altercation between two men on Sunday morning, shortly before 10am.

Shocked parents reported seeing three police cars and police van arrive at the ground before officers headed to an artificial football pitch where the incident took place.

It is alleged a 39-year-old man was assaulted and suffered bruising and swelling to his face.

It is understood the violence broke out during a junior football game.

Officers have spoken to a 40-year-old man over the incident and inquiries are ongoing.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We were contacted at 9.55am yesterday, Sunday, September 4, following reports on an altercation between two males at Ruskin Leisure on Ruskin Drive.

"A 39-year-old man is reported to have been assaulted by a second man who then left the area prior to police arriving. The injured man suffered bruising and swelling to the face.

"A 40-year-old man has since been spoken to by officers and enquiries are continuing.
