A SINGER with aggressive cervical cancer says she is proud of her "amazing mum" who plans to walk 300,000 steps in September for Cancer Research.

Sarah Waters from Prescot went for her first routine smear test in April, after it had been delayed for two years due to the pandemic.

But after going on a hen do to Mallorca in May, she returned to news that her smear had shown abnormalities and that doctors wanted her to come in for further tests.

The results confirmed that she had a rare and aggressive type of cervical cancer called poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.

She recently underwent a full hysterectomy ahead of undergoing chemotherapy treatment and is in recovery being cared for by her mum Susan Hulme.

However, she says she was just "in awe" of her mum after she vowed to raise as much money as she could for Cancer Research UK by doing 300,000 steps in September.

Sarah, 30, said: “After I had the hysterectomy on August 16, they removed everything except my ovaries, and I’ve been cared for by my mum while I recover.

“Next week I will get the results back and start treatment but my mum, who is a teacher at Evelyn Community Primary School, decided to take on another challenge of doing 300,000 walks.

“I can’t believe she wants to take something else on, but she does 5,000 steps a day anyway according to her fitbit and she’s decided to do walks of an evening after I go to bed too to get the number up.

“She’s just an amazing mum, I’m in awe of her, she’s been so strong throughout this.”

Sarah also thanked the St Helens and Prescot communities for offering her kind messages of support following the initial article in the Star published last month.

The 30-year-old added: “You will never realise how much those messages have meant to me.

“I’ve been told some people have booked their smears because of that article, and that means the world to me.”
