WITH schools reopening next week, family plans for quality time will now be essential for the weekend.
Ian Seville is a retired police officer and hiking enthusiast that records his walks on social media.
The 72-year-old has received a positive response from followers as he documents outdoor hikes across the region.
Ian said: "The pickup after my initial message was really promising. I began to recognise names that were coming through with people regularly monitoring the site and indicating in the comments that they were going to have a go at the walk.
"They’re ideal for this time of year with parents looking for somewhere to take the kids. The Wizard’s Wander and Fairy Glen are perfect ones for children.
"It’s a great way for when you take the kids out for a wonder to learn a little bit of history and a little bit of geography."
To help with weekend plans, here are three nearby walks ideal for a family hike, all recommended by Ian.
The Wizard’s Wander – Alderley Edge
This walk is perfect for Harry Potter fans as it's known for its local legend of Wizards.
Located down the road to Alderley Edge, Wizard’s Wander is an ideal walk for families with young children to learn about the history of copper mining dating back 4000 years to the Bronze Age.
Families are also able to have a glimpse of Roman times with caves found in the area.
Ian noted that a car park nearby is located past a closed down pub, with three-hour parking available for £4 or £7 all day.
Carr Mill Dam - St Helens
This local gem is a perfect Sunday morning stroll just off the East Lancs Road.
Carr Mill Dam is a suitable hike for all ages and is one for a light walk.
Ian mentioned that trainers will be safe to use on the dry pathways and is reasonably accessible for pushchairs and lighter wheelchairs.
Fairy Glen – Parbold
This local walk near the M6 is perfect for parents with young children, with enchanting trails and waterfalls to enjoy.
Ian mentioned there are plenty of evidence of fairies on the trail, with coins and fairy dust left behind.
An ancient burial site dating back to 2000 BC is spotted on the journey back if you take a detour to visit Boar’s Den Bowl Barrow.
This walk is one of Ian’s favourites as it’s both magical and educational.
