SAINTS head coach Kristian Woolf has described what a League Leaders’ Shield success this season would say about his players.
One point is needed from the remaining three rounds of Super League to secure the table-toppers’ prize for St Helens RLFC.
A draw or a win against their arch-rivals Wigan at the DW Stadium on Friday would therefore secure the shield for the club for the first time since 2019.
Woolf said: “I think it would cement the group that they are.
“They’re resilient as a group, and how hard they want to work for each other as a group.
“It would obviously be a great achievement.
“But to be honest that’s not our number one goal going into this week.
“Our number one goal this week is that it’s a big game in its own right. It’s Saints versus Wigan at the DW Stadium and we know what that entails.
“And it’s exactly what we want in a game at this time of the year, as close as we are to finals.
“We know the intensity it’s going to be. We know the rivalry that it is. We know how much it means to us and we also know how much it means to Wigan.
“For that reason, it’s going to bring a real high quality, a real high intensity and it’s going to bring an atmosphere that’s going to be very much like finals footy and that’s exactly what we want at this time of the year.
“It’s certainly one we’re looking forward to and we can’t wait for, and I’m sure the opposition feel the same.”
