MARIE Rimmer has called for "immediate support" for people struggling with the cost of living crisis.

Following the release of Labour's plan to tackle rising fuel and energy prices, the St Helens South & Whiston MP said that the party would freeze the energy price cap at the current level.

This would prevent a further 80% rise in the price cap this October, and save the average household around £1000.

Labour’s "fully-funded" plan would also support customers not protected by the price cap and those on prepayment meters.

The party said that their £29bn plan would be paid for by placing an extra tax on oil and gas giants, removing a "tax loophole" for energy companies and working to reduce the rate of inflation.

Locally, this means that around £46 million could be saved across households in St Helens South and Whiston, and £44 million from St Helens North.

By reducing energy demand and lower bills in the long term, the emergency package plans to insulate 19 million homes across the country over the next decade.

Marie Rimmer MP said: “Families are scared about how they’ll get through the winter with bills through the roof.

"Everybody knows that a huge price hike is coming, yet the Government is missing in action.

“Labour’s plan to save households £1,000 this winter is the emergency relief that people need.

"The Government cannot stand by and do nothing to help. Our plan will also invest in sustainable British energy to bring bills down in the long-term.

“There needs to be a long term energy plan to make Britain self-sustainable. Yet there needs to be immediate support to help families out. Labour’s plan does both.”
