THE body of a man was found underneath a bridge in St Helens in the early hours.
Police confirmed they were called to reports that a man was found unconscious at the junction of East Lancashire Road and Abbey Road, Windle.
They attended at 3am along with paramedics, on Friday, August 19, however, the 44-year-old's death was confirmed at the scene.
The East Lancashire Road and surrounding roads were closed while police carried out investigations.
Police issue statement
In a statement spokesperson Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm a man has died in the early hours of this morning, Friday 19 August, in St Helens.
"At around 3am emergency services were called after a report that a 44-year-old man was found unconscious under a bridge at the junction of East Lancashire Road and Abbey Road.
"Paramedics attended and he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
"A post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death, and the body is yet to be formally identified."
"Roads were closed but have now reopened to traffic.
