Paying tribute to her former colleague and friend, Marie Rimmer said: “Brendan was a true champion of St Helens, and one of my oldest and dearest friends.

“I first worked with Brendan while he was at St Helens Council. He became a trusted, honest and fair advisor. He loved this town and always sought the best for us.

“I was delighted when he decided to support me once again in my role as MP. Brendan brought with him more than his wealth of experience, he brought his positive and exemplary attitude.

“Brendan achieved a lot in his life, and he was proud to call St Helens his home. From his work helping constituents across St Helens South and Whiston, to his support of West Park RUFC, Brendan always wanted to give back.

“For decades Brendan worked behind the scenes to make a difference to people’s lives. He did not seek nor want recognition or plaudits. He simply wanted to help.

“I will miss you, Brendan. You were a perfect gentleman.”

Meanwhile, St Helens Council, where Brendan worked for more than four decades, has also paid tribute.

Kath O’Dwyer, chief executive of the local authority, said: “Brendan was a much-loved and respected former employee of the council who gave 44-years of impeccable service, holding a variety of roles – working his way up to the position of Head of HR, a role he held right up until his retirement from the council in 2018.

“He was a great ambassador of St Helens Borough Council and was a very proud advocate of his hometown and his beloved West Park RUFC.

“Our sincerest condolences go to his family and friends.  He will be greatly missed.

“Rest in peace Brendan.”
