A HOST of celebrities hit the bowling green at a baking hot Ruskin Drive as the Lol Pennington Memorial Cup was held.

Crowds basked in the sunshine in the convivial surroundings at the event, organised by The Steve Prescott Foundation, along with Woolyback Productions.

Titled, the Barton’s Pickles Johnny Vegas Celebrity Bowls, stars, along with members of the public, competed for the Lol Pennington Memorial Cup.

The contest has become an annual event in memory of Laurence 'Lol' Pennington, the late dad of Thatto Heath comedian and actor Johnny Vegas, who passed away in 2017.

Sixteen celebrities from the worlds of showbiz and sport teamed up with people who bid to play with their favourite stars in a Twitter auction.

Among those to hit the green, along with Johnny Vegas were former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati, Car Share star Sian Gibson, actress and Loose Women regular Sherrie Hewson and actor John Thomson.

Former footballer Peter Reid and ex-Saints rugby league stars including Chris Joynt, Paul Loughlin, Neil Holding, Tommy Martyn, Alan Hunte, and current scrumhalf Lewis Dodd were also among those involved.

There was also be a special showdown between young St Helens stars from the world of entertainment Jude Riordan and Jamie Leahey.

The day's action saw former Saint Neil Holding, playing alongside SPF chairman Mike Denning, emerge triumphant on the day with victory in the final.

Face2Face Agency, Ponts Fun Fair, the 99th Garrison with Star Wars Characters, Donkey Rides, along with CBEEBIES Mega Star Hacker T Dog were among the family-friendly entertainment held on the day.
