A SUMMER programme of kids activities has been helping to bring the local community together, organisers have said.
Business For Youth, a community organisation in Newton-le-Willows, has been holding sporting, educational and interactive events for kids during the summer holidays.
Founded by independent councillor for Earlestown Terry Maguire, Business For Youth organises events community events all year round; from sponsored walks and summer fayres to litter picks and food donation projects.
Their summer activities programme, which is free of charge for children over the age of five in Newton-le-Willows, started with a sports day on Monday, August 1.
This continued with an Environmental Day on Monday, August 8, where almost 70 children listened to talks about recycling, the solar system and how eveything influences the environment.
With Mayor of St Helens Sue Murphy in attendance, the kids were also taught about historical artefacts such as old cars, gas masks, and gramophones, while later getting involved in painting activites and exercises.
With the activities supported by young volunteers and participated by children from across the area, Cllr Maguire said it is a "fantastic" thing to witness the community coming together.
He said: "It was a really fantastic day at the Environment Day this week, with a big turn out of 68 kids coming down.
"The kids absolutely loved it and some of them said how it was a fun mix of history, science and PE.
"We keep these events free because we wholeheartedly believe that every child in the community should have the opportunity to have something like this to go to.
"It's nice to offer something like this to families, and with all the volunteers helping out, you see how it really does bring everyone together."
Business For Youth has further summer activities planned at Crocky Trail on Monday, August 22 and a pre-back-to-school funday on Monday, August 29, and will host a stall at Alexandra Nursing Home's summer fayre on Sunday, August 27.
