WELSH wingman Regan Grace has played his last game for Saints after scan results confirmed that he has suffered a ruptured Achilles.

It is a devastating blow for Grace who sustained the injury running the ball out in the last play of Sunday's defeat at Salford.

Grace, who has signed for Top 14 French rugby union club Racing 92, will require surgery in the coming days.

Having endured an injury-plagued campaign with bicep and then hamstring problems, Grace was looking to sign off his career in the red vee with a fourth consecutive Grand Final win.

But just like Theo Fages last year, Grace will be denied the opportunity to sign off at the end of the campaign.

Coach Kristian Woolf said: "It is a devastating blow for Regan and for us as a team and a club as well.

"Regan has come through our Academy and has been a big part of our club and team for a long time.

"He is a really valued person and a valued player who has been a big part of our success the last couple of years.

"He has had a really tough year injury wise, through no fault of his own – going from a bicep injury to a hamstring injury into now an Achilles injury.

"The fact that he’s not going to be here next year adds more feeling to it and it is sad that this is the way that his Saints career at the moment has finished."

Grace has been a hugely popular crowd pleaser since scoring on his his senior debut at Wigan on Good Friday 2017.

The injury not only scuppers the 25-year-old's finale with Saints, but will impact on his new start in France. 

"We all really feel for him and know that he is well supported there by his partner Nina and obviously his family.

"But it is a real shame and a really sad way to see him finish.

"He will get surgery in the next few days and that is something the club will try and do as soon as possible for him.

"He’ll get all the support he needs from the club and his from his teammates.

St Helens Star:

"And will make sure that when he leaves at the end of the year to go to his next club that we put him in the best position we can because we want him to be successful there as well," Woolf said.

There was more positive news on in-form second row Curtis Sironen's bicep injury.

Initial fears that the big Australian packman had suffered a ‘Jonny Lomax type’ ruptured bicep have been dispelled.

Woolf explained: "The scans have come back a lot more positive and it is looking like a minor injury.

"He is not nailed on for playing this week but he has a real chance.

"You think the worst when players come off because our luck has not been great in that department this year.

"Like we have done a number of times we will make sure he is 100 per cent before we throw him out there and when we do we certainly back him."

Saints wing Tommy Makinson will return to action after missing the last four matches after picking up a knock early in the game at Catalans.
