A spokesman said that a burst pipe had caused the loss of water supplies.
It is understood schools in the area were disrupted due to the issue, with Legh Vale Primary having to ask parents in key stage two to pick their children up early, although the school did not close.
In an update at 2pm, a United Utilities spokesman said: "A burst has been spotted and reported to us on Warrington Road and we can confirm this to be the cause of no water or low pressure in your area.
"We're on with it and our team will be in the area as soon as possible to get this fixed.
"Thank you for your patience, we hope to have things back to normal as soon as possible.
"We will keep you updated as we progress with the repair."
In a further update at 4pm, United Utilities added: "Repairs to the burst in your area are underway, but our team still have work to do.
"Please be assured we are working as quickly as we can to get things back to normal, thanks for your patience.
"We will keep you updated as we progress with the repair."
