POLICE have confirmed that the dog that was involved in the tragic death of Bella-Rae Birch was an American Bully XL.
17-month-old Bella-Rae was attacked by the family dog at her home on Bidston Avenue at around 3.50pm on Monday, March 21.
The dog, which was bought by the family around a week ago, was "humanely destroyed" after the attack.
As part of the police's investigation, the dog was subject to further forensic examinations to determine the breed of dog and whether it is a legal breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991).
Tests have now concluded that the dog involved was an American Bully XL, a legal breed not subject to any prohibitions.
Merseyside Police are continuing enquiries into the tragic incident, as the family remain supported by specialist officers.
