A BLUE and yellow armband has been added to the workers’ memorial statue in St Helens to show support for the people of Ukraine.

The armband, featuring the colours of the Ukrainian flag, has been placed on to the structure as a mark of solidarity with the war-torn country following the recent invasion by Russian forces.

The 1.8m statue, which depicts an industrial worker holding a child, was unveiled in April 2019 at the Vera Page Park.

The St Helens Workers Memorial charity came up with the idea of the memorial, near to the Steve Prescott Bridge. The site is the former Lyons Yard, an area of regenerated former industrial land that was the centre of a range of heavy industries.

Near Saints' stadium and retail parks it is said to form "a unique juxtaposition between the town’s industrial heritage and future aspirations".
