POLICE investigating the death of a 21-year-old dad following a hit and run have made an appeal to trace "key witnesses" to the tragic incident.  

Adam Conway, from Haydock, was found lying on a road in Moss Bank, close to the Moss Bank Hotel, at about 12.30am by patrolling officers on Wednesday, January 12.

The father-of-two, who worked at the University of Manchester, had been hit by a Blue Mazda hatchback which was driven from the scene.

The car was later located by police. 

Police have today confirmed that the fatal collision on Washway Lane, Haresfinch which is a few hundred yards from where Adam's body was found in Moss Bank.

In a statement police said that following extensive CCTV and witness enquiries by officers police "now believe the occupants of a blue coloured Ford Fiesta may hold vital evidence that could assist the investigation".

Constable Andy Roper, of Merseyside Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

"We are keen to speak with the driver or occupants of this vehicle. 

“They were driving along Washway Lane in the direction of City Road when the incident occurred.

"They may recall having to pass a small red car that had stopped to assist at the scene. 

“I would also like to reassure them that they are not in trouble and any information they give could really support our enquiries.

“If you were in this car and recall anything from this incident, or hold dash camera CCTV footage within the vehicle, then please get in touch as you may hold information that could assist our investigation.”

Family tribute

Last month Adam's father released the following statement: "[Adam was] a much-loved grandson, son, step-son, brother, stepbrother, cousin and a father to Alexia aged four and George aged nine months.

"Adam was a super-intelligent, lovely, polite, caring young man who was one in a million. He had a very promising career working at the University of Manchester as an animal technician and his potential was quickly spotted by his bosses with him destined to climb through the ranks to the top.

"He had the ability to light up any room he walked into with his bubbly personality and sense of humour.

"He was definitely a nanny’s boy, who was not only his nan, but his best friend. The bond between them was clear for everyone to see.

"All who had the pleasure in knowing Adam has been left with a lasting impression and no doubt will be impacted by his early death.

"He made me proud every day and touched the hearts of so many and will be massively missed.

"He was and still is my world, my everything. Love you Adam my son, until we meet again.

Arrest

Following Adam's death, a 51-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.

He was released under investigation pending further enquiries.
