A SCHOOLBOY was allegedly assaulted by a man on Sunday evening as he played football on Eaves Lane in Sutton.
Two Sutton Academy schoolboys were passing their football to one another on Eaves Lane after being out in Sutton Park at about 8.10pm on Sunday, January 23.
A man, described as being around 6ft and in his 50s, reportedly came over to the two boys while screaming and swearing at them.
Before the boys had a chance to respond, the man reportedly gave one of the 11-year-old's a "right hook" and knocked him onto the ground.
The boys then ran home and explained to their parents what had happened, stressing they were not antagonising the man.
Emma Sanderson, the mum of the boy who was struck, said: "They said they were not up to anything – and I'm not naive, I know I may be getting half-truths – but to punch an 11-year-old in the face is not acceptable.
"He's a bit shaken up by it and so is his friend because they love playing out."
The incident has been reported to the police, but Emma said she was told it is "not a priority" for the force.
Confirming the report, a Merseyside Police spokesperson said:
"At around 8.50pm last night (Sunday 23 January) officers were called to a report of an assault in St Helens.
"It was reported that a man shouted at a young boy on Eaves Lane and assaulted him.
"The boy sustained an injury to his face that did not require hospital treatment.
"Officers are continuing to carry out CCTV and witness enquiries in the area."
