ST Helens dartist Michael Smith suffered a heartbreaking semi-final defeat in the Grand Slam of Darts after relinquishing a 12-8 lead to Peter Wright who staged an astonishing comeback to reach tonight's final with Welshman Gerwyn Price.
Smith had controlled the contest until Wright took the lead for the first time since the opening leg when it went 13-12.
And the Clock Face thrower was powerless as the number two seed powered his way to win eight consecutive legs and leave Smith still seeking that elusive first major title.
Smith dominated the early stages before missing a good chance to go 4-1 up at the first break as he failed to convert six darts at doubles with Wright taking advantage to make it 3-2.
The game continued to see Smith hold his lead with a 170 checkout a particular highlight as he edged ahead 4-3.
But Wright produced a 170 checkout of his own which sparked and incredible revival as he clawed his way back to 11-12 before taking the lead with near-flawless darts.
Wright will now be aiming for his maiden Grand Slam win as he seeks revenge for the 2019 final, when Price beat him 16-6.
