FIREFIGHTERS of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service will climb the stairs of Radio City tower 343 times on Saturday, September 11, to remember the 343 fallen firefighters of the 9/11 attacks in New York.

Taking place from 10am, the gruelling challenge will be completed by firefighters from St Helens and across the region in their full fire kit and breathing apparatus, raising funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and the FDNY Foundation.

On the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks, the completion of each stair climb is dedicated to each firefighter who committed the ultimate sacrifice and went into the burning World Trade Centre buildings to save lives.

Co-ordinator of the event, Alan Knell said: “The climb is a tribute to the firefighters […] who were willing to put their lives on the line to save life.”

Explaining the reasons for the challenge, he added: “It doesn’t matter what part of the world you’re from, the fire service is a brother and sisterhood. There is a deep admiration and respect for the role of a firefighter and their course of duty.”

Appreciating the “different level of stress” caused by the potential of not coming home after work, local firemen and women wish to pay their respects to the firefighters who committed to their duty in the 9/11 terror attacks - described as a firefighters “worst fear”.

Neil Habberfield, charity representative for St Helens Fire Station, said: "[I'm] feeling excited about the challenge [but] definitely not taking it lightly as it will be hard work, especially wearing breathing apparatus which weigh 15kg.

"We accepted the challenge because it serves to remember the firefighters that paid the ultimate sacrifice, climbing the stairs of the Radio City Tower just over twice is the equivalent of the climb that firefighters made in the Twin Towers.

"The Firefighters who committed on 9/11 did so without thought of their own safety and were only interested in helping others. Forever heroes.

"Since 9/11 St Helens Fire Station has been twinned with Engine Company 230, Brooklyn."

With such a physically demanding job, the firemen and women are said to love the physical challenge of events like the Radio City tower climb; with the Fire Fighters Charity committed to hosting future similar events to ensure their services can continue.

Understanding the daily stress experienced by firefighters, these services include support with physical rehabilitation and mental health problems.
